My recent trip down to Kosciuskzo National Park had the intention of leading a group of hikers around the Summit and Main Range tracks of a total of approximately 28kms and a shorter walk early the next day. During the week my warnings and weather updates kept everyone aware, I was that close to cancelling but the group were committed to travelling down -
NO amount of praying or "Sundances" were going to turn this thing around, Friday night was atroious with gale force winds and driving rain. Saturday morning 8am was met with very low cloud and wind gusts of up to 70kms, ok time to abandoned plan A and retreat as iam not leading a group through the forces of Mother Nature when - 1) the risk does not need to be taken as we were already coming from safer ground into the eye of a storm - 2) I was not %100 confident that everyone had the correct gear to face such harsh conditions.
The good things was we managed to do a hike in the National Park and retreated for a fun and entertaining evening that night.
You learn about adapting to the situation and try to make the best of it, You might feel empty/ frustrated that the original plan was not executed but in the interest of the people that are expecting something, adapting to change and moving on is very important.
"See it does Snow in Summer - Winds of up to 70kms, driving rain and a wind chill of as low as -10"
