Hiking in Adelaide Hills and Hanhdorf

This was day two of a two day hike that I did on parts of the Heysen Trail and it happened to be around the Adelaide Hills region, Which is rather picturesque.

The Hills would not be the Hills without the winery's. Though thankfully you don't see them while on trail the Cleland Conservation Park and Bel Air National Park are fantastic places to visit while in Adelaide.

Do yourself a favour and visit both / Fantastic parks just a short drive from the BIG Country Town. (Adelaide)

Once approaching Waterfall Valley at Cleland Con Park you have a sense of scale as you walked through the Car park onto the first waterfall which was almost nothing but a trickle with the lack of rain, You looked up and around and the valley cuts into a rising mountain range - I thought to my self WHAT would it be like after some serious heavy rain - WOW, Witnessing the PURE RAW ENERGY and flow into the FIRST WATERFALL Would have been nothing short of Amazing and a fantastic opportunity to photograph.

From here you can follow the trail which is only 8kms return to MT LOFTY or do others side trips, like the Adventure trail which is a more of a challenging bush trail unlike the direct route to MT LOFTY. You can also continue on the Heysen Trail which is a trail that starts at Cape Jervis and Ends in the Flinders Ranges some 1200kms later YEAH - Hell YEAH.

For me I came to the end on the Heysen Trail a little after reaching Mt Lofty as I had a date at Hahndorf -

I made Hanhndorf in the late afternoon for evening dinner, it was like i was tracing my steps of my European background.

EXPERIENCE HAHNDORF

Hahndorf is classified as Australia's oldest surviving German settlement and each year thousands of people, young & old, enjoy its German charm and of course the hospitality.

Hahndorf is a small town in the Adelaide Hills region of South Australia. Currently a

important tourism spot, it has previously been a centre for farming and services. It is accessible from Adelaide, the South Australian capital, via the South Eastern Freeway.

The town was settled by Lutheran migrants largely from in and around a small village then named Kay in Prussia and now known as Kije, Lubusz Voivodeship in Poland. Many of the settlers arrived aboard the Zebra on 28 December 1838. The town is named after Dirk Meinhertz Hahn, the Danish captain of the Zebra. It is Australia's oldest surviving German settlement.

Mt Lofty -

This popular walk is short and sweet. With a cafe at each end, a well made path and regular seating, this walk is popular for a reason.

On almost any morning of the year the trail attracts a range of people: some casually walking, others using it as a training walk, some runners, and others with heavy-simulated packs training for distant hiking locations like Nepal. As the walk involves some steep sections, the time taken to walk the trail can vary significantly.

On a busy weekend, car parking at Waterfall Gully can be limited.

Starting hiking from Mt Lofty instead of Waterfall Gully can be a good way to use the downhill as a warm up, to super charge your up-hill efforts.

Mount Lofty (34°58′S 138°42′E, elevation 727 metres AHD) is the highest point in the southern Mount Lofty Ranges. It is located about 15 km east of the Adelaide city centre in South Australia, and has panoramic views of the city and the Adelaide plains to the west, and of the Picadilly Valley to the east.

The Heysen Trail -

South Australia’s 1,200km Heysen Trail extends from Cape Jervis, on the Fleurieu Peninsula, to Parachilna Gorge, in the Flinders Ranges, traversing coastal areas, native bushland, rugged gorges, pine forests, vineyards, rich farmland and historic towns.

It caters for both the serious backpacker hiking the entire trail and for walkers doing day walks along shorter sections.
