Gold Coast Hinterland - From Lamington to Springbrook National Park's

Elabana Falls on the Box Forest Circuit @ Lamington National Park

O'Reilly's Rainforest / Green Mountain -

Lamington National Park ...

O'Reilly's - Even as the O'Reilly boys were carving out a living as dairy farmers in the dense scrub, moves were well underway to turn the rainforests of the McPherson Range that surrounded them into what we now know as Lamington National Park. Inspired by a visit to the world's first national park, Yellowstone in the US, grazier Robert Collins entered state parliament in 1896 with the express purpose of seeing green areas like the Lamington Plateau preserved – although his original idea was for a much more modest 'health reserve'.Others joined him in the fight, calling the area the 'Blue Mountains of Queensland', but it was Collins who rightly earned the title 'Father of the National Parks system in Queensland'.

Lamington National Park - Most of the park is situated 900 metres (3,000 ft) above sea level only 30 kilometres (19 mi) from the Pacific's ocean shores. The plateaus and cliffs in Lamington and Springbrook National Parks are the northern and north western remnants of the huge 23-million-year-old Tweed Volcano, centered around Mount Warning. Elevation in the south of the park is above 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) in some parts.[2] The land declines to under 700 metres (2,300 ft) in the north. Some of the mountains in the park include Mount Hobwee, Mount Widgee, Mount Toolona, Mount Cominan, Mount Roberts and Mount Bithongabel - All of this and more forming the Scenic Rim

I set out to spend some time in this region that is a little forgotten at times when people think of Sout East Queensland / Gold Coast - They think beaches and more beaches followed by Theme Parks - Yeah? Well there is also a great Theme Park west of the Obvious, the two Parks that come to Mind are Lamington and Springbrook National Park's. These "Theme Parks" Have got some amazing natural beauty and ancient forests with a array of waterfalls that wont leave you disappointed -

Box Forest Circuit -

Fantastic walk in as you let the crystal clear waterfall mist revive your senses and take in the delight of discovering the palette of forest colours as you pass the very impressive Brush Box trees.

Log Box Falls

The Box Forest Track leaves the Picnic Rock track 2.7 km from the entrance and is a most rewarding circuit walk. The track winds down through stands of Brush Box and Piccabeen Palms, to the lush sub-tropical rainforest along Canungra Creek. Pepper Vines cling to tall trees that often support spectacular tree gardens.

Turn right at the next track junction. During rain , you will have to wade through the water when crossing above Wajinya Falls. The track continues near the top of the falls on the other side. Darragumai Falls and Picnic Rock are considered good lunch spots. Don't miss Box Log and Elabana Falls on the way home.

Springbrook National Park -

Dominating the Gold Coast's western skyline, Springbrook's cool forests and mountain streams offer views of impressive landscapes, and walks among subtropical and temperate rainforest, open eucalypt forest and montane heath.

Spectacular waterfalls, cascades and tumbling creeks are dominant features in this Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area.

Springbrook National Park covers 6725ha and is in four main sections—Springbrook plateau, Mount Cougal to the south east and Natural Bridge and Numinbah to the west. The plateau has many lookouts with fabulous views while Mount Cougal offers an insight into the area's logging history.

Visit the Natural Bridge by day to see a unique waterfall or after dark to discover the park's amazing glow-worms.
